Frost delay

Well, our winter has been very strange this year-- warm then cold, warm then cold. We had another cold snap this weekend, so I brought the plants in. I probably didn't really need to, but I'm protective right now! I just started this whole thing, so I really don't want my efforts to be wasted just yet.

Bringing them in reminded me that I hadn't labeled my little seed pots, and I probably will want to know which one to plant by the trellis and which one will be a bush! I came up with this solution with plastic knives we have sitting around.

One might not expect to have problems with frost here in the Valley of the Sun, but apparently, there is more to it than mere freezing temperatures. According to The Garden Helper, plants can get a few degrees colder than the air around them. "As the temperature drops, the moisture in the air condenses into dew, which then freezes when the temperature reaches 32° F. on the plant surfaces." So, there can be frost on the ground when the temperature isn't even at freezing. (That's why there can be a frost delay on the golf course when it doesn't seem cold enough, I guess!)
